Borrowed a spare shop-vac from work (I have a little one that I didn’t want to empty after 10 seconds of succ), a large fan, and went to town trying to dry the carpet, bare floor, and pull up the rest of the laminate in the basement office to dry out what was under there (more painted concrete )
I think there is still water traversing from the shop (to the left in the above photo) under the carpet because after shop vaccing it from squishy spl ashy to just damp, after a few minutes it was back to squishy (but not splashy)
The laminate and under flooring is gone in the office, j ust some damp concrete that will air dry with all the fans I have going down there:
Anyone want to buy some slightly used wood flooring? Barely used, just installed in 2015:
There’s still water trapped under all the heavy boxes of albums we inherited from my FIL, I’m still kicking myself for not setting them on pallets like we had at the old house. We KNEW that basement leaked but were lulled into a false sense of security that this new house’s basement was bone dry and finished sometime in the 90's .
Reverse angle, more albums in damp-bottomed boxes:
Thankfully its just an empty box, but maybe I can tell insurance ... I’M KIDDING.
The laundry room (where the sump and lift pumps are) was the first to dry, of course. Now there’s just shiny grey paint:
I’m waiting for all those rolls of carpet to dry/drain so they’re easier to carry up the stairs and to the trash pile growing in my garage.
Drywall will have to be removed:
Tonight I get to remove the carpet in the rec room. Its starting to stank. Fun fun.

Do you have a dehumidifier? I’d recommend a 70pt, or th e biggest one you can get your hands on.

Yup. It’s been doing work. Currently at 58% humidity down there. Started at 70+ after the power came back on. I usually have it set at 50-55% to keep the basement (and those albums) dry.

Possibly. I bought a generator and might just keep/use that the next time, or sell it and get a battery backup for the sump.

On I’m curious if this is covered under flood insurance or homeowners insurance. The way it was explained to me is if the water comes in from outside it is a “flood” and therefore not covered under normal insurance. However, since you have a sump that stopped working (thanks trees!) I would think normal insurance would cover it.

Eh, in my opinion do both. The battery backup will handle a few hours of outage (in case you can’t get home right away) and the generator will be needed for stuff like this.

I was told it is covered, not sure if because flood or power loss, plus there’s some county disaster funds I’m sure we’ll qualify for. Gotta have a professional service come out though and check/clean everything.

Or I can plug my Xbox into it and fridge so I can at least enjoy myself while I wait for the power to come back on the next time

Cool. I too have a (unfinished) basement, so I was curious. Luckily my floor drain works (thanks to $2000 of plumbing work) so this would only be an issue if it shat the bed again during a downpour. Which, of course, it would.
